Direct selection

Note: Direct selection is recommended for advanced users only.

Direct selection is a method of delivering your inventory without using websites or zones. It offers greater flexibility and power, it should be noted that because the selection is made from within the ad tag you must change the tag whenever you want to alter the selection. It is also more difficult to implement on your website, hence our recommendation that it only be utilized by advanced users.

To begin using direct selection, go to Inventory > Direct Selection.

  • Choose the type of banner invocation you wish to generate (JavaScript, local mode, no cookie image tag, etc.). This will generate your Bannercode:

  • Select your tag settings:

  • In the banner selection box you should insert a series of 'statements' relating to the properties a banner must possess to be considered for delivery. Direct selection can be used in this way to show a number of HTML banners with a specific width and height, or the ID property can be used to deliver an ad with a specific ID to a web page.

There are various types of statement available:

  • Banner ID statement
  • Campaign ID statement
  • Width statement
  • Height statement
  • Dimensions statement
  • Textads statement
  • Keywords statement

Banner, campaign, width and height statement types comprise:

  • a property
  • a separator
  • a value
  • an example

For detailed guidelines on banner selection and using the direct selection delivery technique, refer to our direct selection tutorial.

The other tag settings are:

  • Campaign: select which campaign you wish to deliver using this technique.
  • Don't show the banner again on the same page: click yes if you want the banner to display more than once per page.
  • Don't show a banner from the same campaign again on the same page: tick yes if you do not want to show any other banner from this campaign on this page view.
  • Target frame: This value sets the HTML TARGET attribute in the tags. The Default option opens the target page in a new browser tab, or you can change it to open in a new window or in the current window.
  • Source: Enter a source value if you want to limit banner delivery based on source, such as 'fishing' or 'kitchenware'.
  • Show text below banner: Tick yes if you want to display text below a banner. Enter this text in the Banner Properties page.
  • Character set: Select the character set you want ads to display in on your website. (In general it is only necessary to alter the default Autodetect setting when certain tags - such as local mode tags - are in use.)
  • Option - noscript: Select this option if you would like to include backup tags to be shown to users who have JavaScript disabled. These backup tags can only serve plain image banners.
  • Option - SSL: Select this option if you would like the tags generated to be used on SSL pages. (By default the generated tags will make plain HTTP calls to get the ads to display. When serving these tags into an SSL page a 'mixed content' broweser security warning may be displayed to the end user.)
  • Include comments: tick yes if you want implementation instructions to be included in your generated tags.

Note: the tag settings available to you will vary depending on the type of banner invocation you selected at the top of the page.

When you have made your selections, click Refresh.
